Here are two California oak trees on a hilltop in Arastradero Park in Palo Alto, California. The oaks have long since lost their leaves for winter, and at the same time the winter rains have brought life to the hillside grasses, showing the natural contrast of the dormant oaks against the actively growing grasses. Nature and the microcliimates of the Pacific Northwest combine here to give rise to this strange juxtaposition of active growth and dormancy on the same hillside landscape.
