The original title of this print was "The Viking", for close scrutiny of the original print reveals to the imaginative mind that to the right of the sunlit oak tree a fierce Viking warrior strides across the landscape armed with a massive shield and spear. Of course, reality is quite different, and this Viking is really the remains of a more distant oak in the middle ground of the image. The beautiful fields, golden in the light of the afternoon sun which rakes across the landscape, give the final title to the piece, which is a suitable eternal home for any warrior.
